The Masterplan and Urban Design Framework for the former Smithwicks Brewery site in Kilkenny City, approved by the elected members of Kilkenny Co. Co. at a meeting held on 31st July 2015, made provision for the development of a Riverside Garden / Linear Park along the western bank of the River Nore, from the area of the Tea Houses at Bateman Quay to Greens Bridge.

In addition, objective 6B of the Kilkenny City & Environs Development Plan outlines an objective ‘To complete the development of the River Nore Linear Park within the lifetime of the Plan’.

The proposed riverside garden development will extend the River Nore Linear park through the city centre, in particular through the previously inaccessible area of the Brewery Site.  In addition, the proposed development will in the future facilitate access to St Francis Abbey, the city Walls and Evans Turrett (all National Monuments) and will become a key element of the Medieval Mile Project.

In accordance with the provisions of Part 8, Article 81 of the Planning & Development Regulations 2000-2015, details of the proposed development are now being placed on public display.  Details of the proposed development will be on display from 20th November 2015 to 15th January 2016.  Submissions and observations with respect to the proposed development, dealing with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area in which the development will be carried out are now invited , with a closing date for  receipt of submissions on Friday 29th January 2016.
