Loop walk around the town.
While we have a sufficient, safe and well maintained loop walk around the GAA grounds, a new loop walk and cycle lane around the town would be a more immersive nature experience and would greatly enhance our physical and mental wellbeing. We could further honour our flora and fauna and our very own little hero The Nore fresh water pearl mussel by erecting information boards along the way.
Derelict Buildings …….could be greatly enhanced by simple painting as suggested. Could further work be done to turn these premises into viable homes again?
Our beautiful castle has an impressive visual impact, could we possibly build a tourism attraction linked to it, even if from a distance?
The Community Hall which is widely used by many different groups in the community is badly in need of upgrading. Funding for this is constantly being denied, despite the tremendous efforts of the the Town Development Association.
Upgrading footpaths particularly in the Grove Terrace area where there is only a narrow path on one side of the road. This path is literally the width of a single person. This is a very busy road and a very busy walkway down to the GAA pitch. This area could also benefit with a pedestrian crossing near the GAA entrance. The provision of footpaths from the town out the Moate Rd would greatly enhance pedestrian safety. At the moment on leaving the town you have to cross to the wrong side of the road because of lack of visibility to the oncoming traffic.
Traffic calming on entering the town particularly from the Moate Road is high priority. There is very poor visibility when exiting the Fairgreen onto the Moate Rd. Previously as an extra safety measure one could open the car window and listen for traffic but with the advent of electric vehicles, that no longer applies as you won’t hear them coming!
Parking……. There are many car/ van parking spaces behind the retail units in Glendale. Simple signage may remind people of their presence.
Ev charging unit could be positioned in the Glendale parking area.
Butler House……Both the building itself, the walled gardens and traditionally there was a beautiful walled orchard have massive potential. The accommodation area which is substantial could potentially house a community library, a community cafe, a yoga studio, a gym,a work hub, an exhibition space and at the Church End of the house a place of repose for those who choose not to wake at home. The yard/garden areas have potential to accommodate a men’s shed building, community garden, a repair cafe, space for potential craft workers similar to that in the Castlecomer Discovery Park. The premises is well situated with ample parking at the Church.
