Litir Chumhdaigh

My name is Pauline Byrne and I have a child going to school in Stoneyford NS.

Observations

Reducing speed limits around the school for the safety of the school children

Caibidil:

To whom it may concern,

I note that there are currently no proposals to change the speed limits or put in place traffic calming measures at the southern end of Stoneyford Village where Scoil Chiaráin Noafa is located. It is my opinion, as a parent of children who attend this National School that a review of the speed limits on the roads around the school should take place as a matter of urgency. The school has grown in recent years which has led to a substantial increase in the number of pupils walking to school every day. At present, as there are no parking facilities for parents at the school, and parents dropping their children to school are parking along the street in Stoneyford village and walking with their children to the school gates at drop off and collection times. In addition, many of the older children walk to school unattended by an adult. In order for pupils to reach the school from the village it is necessary for them to cross two busy roads, first the Norelands Road at a point close to the junction with the main road and then the Mount Juliet Road at a point opposite the school gates. There is no pedestrian crossing on the Norelands Rd to facilitate children to cross safely, and while there is a pedestrian crossing on the Mount Juliet Road - the current speed limit on this road and the lack of traffic calming on the approach to the pedestrian crossing point means that vehicles often come down the hill, particularly from the Mount Juliet side at excessive speed and in a reckless manner. Cars are almost past the school before they realise they need to slow down.

A combination of excessive speed limits and absence of traffic calming measures in the vicinity of the school, particularly on the Mount Juliet Road, along with the lack of pedestrian crossing on the Norelands Road and the continuously increasing school population, in my opinion is an accident waiting to happen.

I would be obliged if the points raised above be considered and changes to speed limits in the vicinity of these crossing points be made, along with the provision of traffic calming measures on the Mount Juliet Road and a pedestrian crossing on the Norelands Road.

Sincerely,

Pauline Byrne
