Introduction

Kilkenny County Council's Fire and Rescue Service has recently published its annual statistics for call out activities for 2021 with more than 660no incidents responded to involving fire, traffic accidents and other emergencies.

The main objective of the fire and rescue service, provided by Kilkenny County Council, is to provide for the safety of persons and properties through fire prevention and operational response to fire and other emergency incidents.

To respond effectively to all calls the Fire and Rescue Service must be well equipped, highly trained and ready at all times.

John Collins, Chief Fire Officer stated that “Kilkenny Fire and Rescue Service is proud to serve, support and render assistance to the people of Kilkenny and neighbouring counties 365 days a year 24-hours a day. We are sharing details of the incidents responded to by our Fire and Rescue Service in 2021 to increase awareness of the range of services that we attend.”

Fire officers positively engage with the public through educational and community awareness initiatives each year, working together to reduce the risk of incident for the people of our comunities. Where incidents cannot be prevented, swift and efficient operational response is essential to minimize risk to life and harm to persons and property.

Every five years the Fire Authority is required to adopt a five-year Fire and Emergency Operations Plan to map out how the fire and rescue service will be strengthened and maintained going forward.

This year a new Fire and Emergency Operations Plan will be adopted for the period 2022 to 2026.

John Collins Chief Fire Officer explained that “a large part of our fire and rescue service is around engagement and education and as part of that ethos of collaboration with the public we are inviting people to view our Fire and Emergency Operations Plan and to let us have your comments before the plan is brought to the elected members of Kilkenny County Council for formal adoption in March 2022”.

The public can look at the proposed Fire and Emergency Operations Plan on Kilkenny County Councils on-line consultation system consult.ie to learn more about the service  and have a say on the plan for the next five years.

Cathaoirleach Fidelis Doherty stated that “Kilkenny County Council continues to invest in its Fire and Rescue Service and that this proposed Fire and Emergency Operations Plan outlines the structure of our service over seven fire stations, with 75no staff with an overall annual budget of more than €4m for the purpose of planning and running a modern fire and rescue service”.

Cllr Pat Dunphy, chairperson of the SPC said “it demonstrates Kilkenny County Council’s commitment to our fire and rescue services as it outlines in the plan for fire appliances, stations, equipment and water supplies that will enable service delivery and the high levels of training and procedural detail required to ensure that the quality and effectiveness of that service can be delivered as quickly and safely as possible.”
